【摘要】:1.1InteroperableImageSearchandRetrievalThisTechnicalReportspecifiestwothings.Thefirstisaframeworkforinteroperabilityforstillimagesearchandretrieval.Thesecondidentifiesanarchitectureandthecomponentsinthisframework,thelinkagesbetweencomponents,andwhichofthesecomponentsandlinksaretobestandardizedinJPSearch.Theimagesearchandretrievalframeworkwillbedeterminedbyrealusecases(tasks)andwillleverageonlessonslearntinthelonghistoryoftextretrievalwhere,forexample,differentusersissuingthesamequerymaybelookingfor(very)differentresults.Thisisimportantbecauseitmeansthattheframeworkmustbegeneralenoughtosupportmanypossibleapproachestoimageretrieval,e.g.,fromusingonlylow-levelimagefeatures,totextannotations,tocommunityinput,oramixtureofsuchapproaches.Fromtheframeworkandcomponents,andthelinkagesandflowofdatabetweenthem,thepartsofJPSearchthatneedtobestandardizedcanbedetermined.1.2MotivationTherearemanyapplicationsthatprovideimagesearchandretrievalfunctionalityoncomputerdesktops,ontheWorldWideWeb(i.e.,websearch),onimagingdevices,andinotherconsumerandprofessionalapplications.Theseimplementationsarecharacterizedbysignificantlimitations,including:?Lackoftheabilitytoreusemetadata?Lackofacommonqueryformatandsearchsemantics?Lackofacommonformatforhandlingcontextinsearching1.3OutlineoftheTechnicalReportTherewillbe7clausestothisreport.Theyarearrangedasfollows:Clause2providesdefinitionsoftermsandabbreviations.Clause3reviewsthetraditionalapproachestoimagesearchandfromvariousexamples,motivatestheimportanceoftheuserinthesearchprocess,theimportanceofmakingexplicittheusertaskanduserevaluation,andthatmeaninginimagesmaybeasmuchaddedfromoutsideasextractedfromtheimageitself.Thismotivatesthenextclause,whicharetherealusecases.Clause4describestherealusecasesofthevariouswayssearchingdoestakeplace.Inparticular,therecouldbemultipleentrypointsintotheoverallsearchframework.Thesewouldincludeautomatic,semiautomatic,andhuman(user)drivensearches.Thesewouldincludespecificusecasesandmotivatingexamplesofsearchesforimages.Clause5describestheoverallsearchandmanagementprocess.Thiscanbeconsideredtherequirementsspecificationsforageneralsearchandmanagementarchitecture.Clause6describesthe4-layerarchitectureforJPSearchandexplicitlyidentifiesthecomponentsinthearchitecture,andwhattheirrolesandpositionsareinthearchitecture.WewilldescribehowtheusecasesdescribedinSection3maptothelayersofthisarchitecture.
